Frugal Recipes: Three Cheap Pot Luck and BBQ Dishes That Don't Look or Taste Cheap

It's Labor Day weekend and a good chance your going to a BBQ or a potluck.  Your in a rush and on a budget but you need something to bring with you that doesn't look as cheap as it is.  Well I'm here for you with my Three favorite recipes to feed a crowd with out breaking the bank.

Fruit salad.

This one is often my go to dish for gatherings.  I can put together a great seasonal fruit salad with what ever is on sale at the time and fill a really HUGE bowl for $10 or less.  It's still hot out so your best option is to Chop your fresh on sale fruits place on a plastic lined cookie sheet and freeze.  You can make several layers with plastic wrap between each layer,  a little Lemon juice will help preserve the fruit after it starts to thaw but go easy on it so you don't change the flavor.  This is a great option.  My last one for a BBQ Had just 3 things.  Strawberries that where in sale 2pints/$3, Mango on sale 2/$1 and 2 Kiwis for 33 cents each.  No one cared that it only had 3 fruits and no one knew the entire dish was under $5.

Flag cake

A classic American holiday treat.  And guess what?  If you buy the off brand cake mix and frosting you can make this cake for under $10.  A trip to your local Aldi can get you cake and frosting that many will swear tastes homemade.  Well unless their an Aldi shopper too.

Seasoned veggies.
A great healthy dish to take to your pot luck or BBQ is Seasoned veggies.  Their cheap and easy to make too.  Grab a bag or two of supper cheap frozen veggies from your grocery store.  No need for the name brand your gonna spice them up.   Pop them in a bot with some water.  Add Oregano, Basil, and if you like a little spice crushed red pepper flakes go great with pretty much any vegetable.  Simmer until hot.  DO NOT BOIL.  It's as simple as that and you can feed a crowed for just a few dollars or less.
